At the
recently concluded 43rd
Council meeting of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organizations ( CTO ) ,
held at Kampala, Uganda from September 08th-11th
2003 , Sri Lanka’s Director-General of
the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission , Mr.Themiya Hurulle
was elected Vice-Chairman 02
of the CTO Council.
This is
the first instance that Sri Lanka
has been elected to such a position in the Commonwealth Telecommunications
Organizations.
The CTO
is the official body dealing in Telecommunications
and promoting the use of Information & Communication Technologies (
ICT’s ) for development within the Commonwealth .
The
Headquarters of the CTO is based
in London and
comprises of 50 full and
associate Commonwealth
Member Countries with its origins
going back to the very beginning of
the 20th Century, when the Governments
of 04 dominions joined
together in the first-ever Commonwealth Co-operation
in the Telecommunications sector
– laying the first
trans-pacific telegraph cables by
the newly created PACIFIC CABLE
BOARD in 1901/1902.
The
Council also accepted the proposal of Sri Lanka
to host the next Council
meeting of the
CTO in Sri Lanka in September 2004.
