Sabaragamuwa Province

“Girls in ICT” for the Sabaragamuwa Province was held on 29th September 2016, from 8.30am to 1.30pm at Vishaka Girls High School Badulla. Representing the province, 53 students from 8 schools who are studying ICT for their GCE Advanced Level and 8 teachers who oversee the ICT stream in those schools participated. The event was organised by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) in calloboration with the ICT Branch of the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Provincial Education Department (PED) and Lanka Bell (Pvt) Ltd.Mrs.. Tharalika Livera, Deputy Director of TRCSL commenced the program with a brief introduction of “Girls in ICT” programme. Afterwards, Mrs. P. G. Sandya Pradarshini, the principal of Vishaka Girls High School and Engineer Mrs. Deepashika Seneviratne, Divisional Manager of Lanka Bell informed the students and teachers who were present about the importance of hosting such events. Next up, Mrs. Livera gave a speech on “ICT for National Development” while Engineer Mr. Manjula Pathiranage, Chief Technical Officer of Lanka Bell gave an introduction of Telecommunication and Information Technology Sector and the evolution of the data aspect in the telecommunication sector. He further elaborated on the relationship of ICT with data and motivating the girls that anything is possible and achievable. Then Ms. Harshani Hettiarachchi, Manager/System Development of Lanka Bell informed the audience about the IT sector employment and classified it under two categories (software and hardware) and explained the nature of the job, as well as what aspects of skills the students should optimize to seek employment in this sector. That introduction was very helpful to the students and it was a great opportunity for them to get answers to many questions about the careers they wish to pursue in the future. Later, Ms. Dilhara Yapa, Project Coordinator of Lanka Bell explained about the systems and how can a system converted into a software system and the systems we use in everyday life. Thereafter, a briefing on Software life cycle is presented and then explained the steps on how to convert an active system into a software system. Later, the students were briefed on the symbols of software requirement gathering and designing. After that, a class room asignment on a requirement analysis and designing had been carried out with the students. They were requested to give their thoughts on; Why did you choose IT as a subject/stream? What kind of employment in the ICT field are you looking for in the future? Most of the students have answered that they want to be a software engineer. Some of the students mentioned that they want to be a web developer, graphic designer, videographer and IT related jobs.

The girls were given an assignment to develop a project under the following topics during the course of three months with our assistance and eventually upload it to this website especially created as a platform for them to showcase their work.

While LankaBell presented the participants with souvenirs, TRCSL gifted the students and teachers a Flash Drive. A token of appreciation was awarded by TRCSL to resource persons, teachers and students for their participation, and certificates were awarded for all the students, teachers for taking their time to be present and fully cooperating to make the event successful.
