Ministerial Conference on Broadband and ICT Development and APT Silver
Jubilee Celebration

Asia-Pacific Telecornmunity
(APT), the leading intergovernmental organization for regional
telecommunications and ICT development in the Asia-Pacific region, organized
the APT MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE ON BROADBAND AND ICT DEVELOPMENT on 1-2 July
2004 at the Ballroom, Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.
The objective of the
Ministerial Conference on Broadband and ICT Development is to establish an
Agenda for Broadband and ICT development in APT member countries. A special
message from Mr. Kofi Annan, Secretary General, United Nations was delivered
on this occasion. Mr.Yoshio Utsumi, Secretary General ITU and Dr. Kim Hak–Su
Executive Secretary United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia
and the Pacific delivered the key note addresses.
The inaugural address was
given by H .E. Dr. Surapong Suebwonglee, Minister of Information and
Communication Technology, Thailand.
This prestigious event was
attended by Ministers and senior executives from APT member countries as
well as representatives of key international organizations such as ESCAP,
ITU, etc and APT Affiliate members.
Hon. Rohitha Abeygunawardena,
Deputy Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Upcountry Development, Mr.
W. M. Piyasena, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Posts,
Telecommunications and Upcountry Development, and Mrs. P. R. Amarasiri,
Acting Director General, Director Legal Affairs and Acting Director Economic
Affairs of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission represented Sri
Lanka at this important event.
This year, the APT is
celebrating its 25th year of service to the Telecommunity. The APT SILVER
JUBILEE CELEBRATION was held at the same venue on 1 July. The special
celebration included the launching of the Silver Jubilee Edition of the APT
Yearbook which, for over a decade, has been regarded as the definitive
reference directory for telecom and ICT professionals in the Asia-Pacific
region.

The Asia-Pacific
Telecommunity (APT) is the leading intergovernmental organization for the
development of
telecommunications and ICT in the Asia -Pacific region. APT was established
by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the
Pacific (UNESCAP) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in
July 1979 with the objective to promote the development of
telecommunications and ICT services in the Asia -Pacific region, with
particular emphasis on the developing countries. Currently, the APT has a
strength of 32 Full Members, 4 Associate Members and 93 Affiliate Members.
Sri Lanka is a member of APT. The headquarters of the APT is located in
Bangkok.
