Colombo,
Sri Lanka, 06 October 2003. Two Sri Lankan
students have been selected to attend the INTERNATIONAL
TELECOMMUNICATIONS UNION (ITU) TELECOM WORLD 2003
Youth Forum, 12-18 October, in Geneva Switzerland.
ITU
TELECOM WORLD is a global event where business
and government decision –makers from the
Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
fields gather to exchange ideas, debate major trends
and issues and network with an unparalleled mix of
audiences from government and industry. The Youth
Forum gives University students from around the
world an opportunity to learn more about the
communications sector and helps prepare them for
leadership roles in their home countries.
“The Youth Forum is designed to
cultivate the industry and government leaders of
tomorrow, “ said the Director-General of the
Telecommunications regulatory Commission of Sri
Lanka, Mr. Themiya Hurulle. “ It’s a
tremendous opportunity for talented young people to
broaden their perspective and knowledge of ICT,
while building contacts with top business and policy
executives.”
Ms. Dulanjali Dhanapala and Mr. K.
Manjula Fernando of the Faculty of Engineering
Universities of Peradeniya and Moratuwa respectively
will participate six days of
interactive panel discussion, work in small groups
to draft reports on various topics, network with
global business and government decision makers and
join the ITU Forum, which features debate and
discussion on critical industry issues. They also
will attend four special sessions focusing on ICT as
a tool for social and economic development.
The Students
have been chosen via a competitive process, whereby
universities and academic establishments from
eligible countries help select one-man and one-woman
of university age to represent their respective
nations at WORLD TELECOM 2003.All costs of
participation are covered by sponsors. The
Government of Sri Lanka and the Telecommunications
Regulatory Commission held a winners’ Ceremony
today for
the two students to wish them well
which promises to be a pivotal event for the
world.
ITU is a
world-wide organization which brings governments and
industry together to coordinate the establishment
and operation of global telecommunication networks
and services; it is responsible for standardization,
co-ordination and development of international
telecommunications including radiocommunication, as
well as the harmonization of national policies.
ITU also
organizes worldwide and regional exhibitions and
forums bringing together the most influential
representatives of government and the
telecommunications industry to exchange ideas,
knowledge and technology for the benefit of the
global community, and in particular the developing
world.
