The “TRCSL ICT Volunteer Program 2024” was organized by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the University of Moratuwa and the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education. The Certificate Awarding Ceremony of this program was held at the TRCSL on 2nd April 2024.

The ICT Volunteer Program is a key capacity-building initiative focused on improving ICT education for students and teachers in rural areas, including those with special education needs. Building on the success of the International ICT Volunteer Program which began in 2011, TRCSL launched its own ICT Volunteer Program as a pilot project in 2019 under the guidance of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Since then, this program has expanded considerably, benefiting hundreds of students across 46 schools in 15 districts.

This year, 35 undergraduates from the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) degree program at the University of Moratuwa participated for the program. Following their boot camp training, the volunteers were assigned to 35 government schools in 13 districts for a two-month period to serve as ICT volunteers.

In addition to improve ICT literacy among students in remote areas, the ICT volunteers themselves are considered as key beneficiaries of this train-the-trainer initiative. The experience and exposure they gain through the program open doors to better opportunities in volunteering, employment, and entrepreneurship. This program continues to serve as a valuable platform for promoting digital inclusion and strengthening ICT education across the country.
