New Batch of Korean International ICT Volunteers arrives to provide ICT Training in remote areas of Sri Lanka

The Korean IT Volunteers (KIV) altogether comprising two teams arrived in Sri Lanka on 12th July 2015 under a NIA -TRCSL Programme to provide ICT training under the TRCSL e-NABLE project programme at two Vocational Training Centers run by the Department of Social Service during the months of July & August in 2015.

TRCSL is co – ordinating the 2015 programme in collaboration with the Korean IT Volunteers supported by the World Friends, the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning and the National Information Society Agency (NIA) of Korea for purpose of enhancement of ICT knowledge and skills of persons with special needs in Sri Lanka. The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka has made arrangements for these Korean teams to train staff members /Instructors at IT centers /students undergoing ICT training under the TRC e-NABLE project in Seeduwa and Wavinna Vocational Training Centers (VTCs) supervised by the Dept. of Social Service. The language of instruction will be English. The Government of South Korea sends teams of Korean volunteers skilled in Information Technology (IT) annually to developing countries to impart training in advanced IT Technology.

The Korean IT Volunteer (KIV) programme is hosted by the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning of Korea and managed by the National Information Society Agency of Korea (NIA) since 2001.
This year the NIA-ITU International ICT Volunteer (IIV) programme is scheduled to provide ICT training for human resource development to persons with special needs / staff. Each of the two KIIV teams will consist of four undergraduates drawn from Korean Universities.

The members of the “Just Do IT” team are Mr. Kang Kyu Park (Team Leader), Ms.Yeon Ji Kim ,  Ms. Ji Young Kim,  Ms. Seo Young Bae and they will be conducting their ICT training programme at Wavinna, Wattegama Vocational Training Center,Kandy.

The members of the team “Moebius” are Mr. Young Jung Lee (Team Leader), Mr. Woo Chang Yang, Mr. Seung Yeob Yu, Ms. Eun Byeol Cho and they will be conducting their training programme at Seeduwa Vocational Training Center.

The syllabus of the KIIV ICT progamme includes Database and Web Development topics such as Adobe Photoshop, HTML5, CSS3, Java script, PHP, MySQL and an introduction to various aspects of Korean culture. We expect to see appreciable benefits accruing to the Vocational Training Centers and enhanced development of ICT skills among members of staff and students following this training by the Korean Volunteers. We are also thankful to the Korean IT Volunteers supported by the World Friends, the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning and the National Information Society Agency of Korea (NIA), and the ITU, for their sustained input in making the Korean IT Volunteer (KIV) programme in Sri Lanka a noteworthy success.
