GIGA Research Lab Team Visits TRCSL to Explore School Connectivity in Sri Lanka

A research team from the GIGA Connectivity Research Lab visited Sri Lanka and held discussions with the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) as part of its efforts to understand the current status of school connectivity in the country.

The visit aimed to gain an overview of Sri Lanka’s school connectivity landscape, including existing telecommunications infrastructure, connectivity solutions, ongoing initiatives, and future plans to expand and improve internet access for schools across the country.

During the discussions, the GIGA research team sought insights from TRCSL and telecommunications operators on the progress achieved in connecting schools, the technologies and infrastructure currently in use, and the challenges encountered in providing reliable and sustainable connectivity. Particular attention was given to rural and underserved areas, where connectivity gaps may continue to limit access to digital learning opportunities.

The engagement also provided an opportunity to share relevant non-confidential information on national strategies, ongoing connectivity initiatives, implementation progress, and future priorities. Discussions focused on understanding how school connectivity is delivered and experienced at school and community levels, while identifying potential gaps, requirements, and opportunities for further improvement.

The visit forms part of the GIGA research team’s independent assessment of Sri Lanka’s efforts to expand school connectivity. The findings are expected to support knowledge sharing, identify opportunities for continuous improvement, and explore potential areas for future collaboration among relevant government institutions, regulators, telecommunications operators, and other stakeholders.

Through such engagements, TRCSL continues to support efforts to improve digital connectivity and promote equitable access to digital learning opportunities, particularly for communities in rural and underserved areas.
