The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka successfully organized the "Girls in ICT Day Program 2025" at the Wayamba National College of Education, Bingiriya on 29th April 2025. This event was conducted in alignment with the global Girls in ICT Day initiative led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Girls in ICT Day, celebrated annually in moth of April since its inception, aims to promote and encourage the participation of girls and young women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sectors. The 2025 theme, "Girls in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation" emphasized the essential contribution of young women toward achieving an inclusive and equitable digital future.
The event at Wayamba National College of Education featured interactive sessions and presentations delivered by industry experts and representatives from the University of Moratuwa, Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT), and Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd. The discussions highlighted critical topics including "Girls in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation: How Teachers Can Lead the Way", “The Importance of ICT Education for Girls: Pathways and Future Prospects for Students”, "Exploring ICT Career Pathways & Breaking Barriers for Girls in a Digitally Inclusive World" and "Protecting Children in the Digital Age". These sessions collectively emphasized the significance of education in ICT as a foundation for empowering young women and opening avenues for future opportunities.
Participants, comprising pre-service teachers as well as academic and non-academic staff of the Wayamba National College of Education gained valuable insights into the opportunities, challenges, and the critical role of women in ICT and STEM fields.
By highlighting successful role models, addressing misconceptions, and providing practical guidance, the program aimed to inspire participants and promote greater female representation in ICT education and career paths. TRCSL continues to actively support initiatives that foster gender equality, digital inclusion, and empower young women to contribute significantly to Sri Lanka’s technological growth and innovation.
